If you suspect you have a mold issue, our certified mold damage restoration professionals are available to inspect your environment and provide you with a mold removal estimate.

WHAT IS MOLD?

Mold, black mold, fungi, bacteria and mildew are all different types of fungal growths that require moisture and organic matter to feed upon. There is a large variety of fungal species, estimated to range from tens of thousands to perhaps 300,000 or more. The most common varieties found inside our homes include Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Stachybotrys, Penicillium and Alternaria. Humidity and water leaks are the main cause of mold infestations; high humidity levels trigger fungus germination and growth, while lower humidity tends to increase the release of mold spores as a method of self-preservation.

SIGNS OF MOLD GROWTH

A mold problem can usually be seen or smelled. Mold growth may often appear as slightly furry, discolored, or slimy patches that increase in size as they grow. Molds also produce a musty odor that may be the first indication of a problem. The best way to find mold is to examine areas for visible signs of mold growth, water staining, or follow your nose to the source of the odor. If you can see or smell mold, you can assume you have a mold problem. Other clues include excess moisture and water damage. It may be necessary to look behind and underneath surfaces, such as carpets, wallpaper, cabinets, and walls. There are some areas of the home that are always susceptible to mold growth and should be part of routine cleaning to keep them under control. They are seldom the cause of significant health effects. If you suspect mold growth in your home, call the mold damage restoration experts at Spangler Restoration right away.

Routinely Check These Areas:
  • The seal on the refrigerator door
  • Shower curtains
  • Window moldings
  • Shower stalls and bathroom tiles
  • Surfaces on and around air conditioners

HOW TO PREVENT MOLD IN YOUR HOME

  • When water leaks or spills occur indoors, ACT QUICKLY. If wet or damp materials or areas are dried 24-48 hours after a leak or spill happens, in most cases mold will not grow.
  • Prevent condensation. Reduce the potential for condensation on cold surfaces (i.e., windows, piping, exterior walls, roof, or floors) by adding insulation.
  • Use an air conditioner or dehumidifier during humid months.
  • Do not carpet bathrooms and basements.
  • Remove or replace previously soaked carpets and upholstery.
  • Run the bathroom fan or open the window when showering. Use exhaust fans or open windows whenever cooking, running the dishwasher or dishwashing, etc.

Keep indoor humidity low. If possible, keep indoor humidity below 60 percent (ideally between 30 and 50 percent) relative humidity. Relative humidity can be measured with a moisture or humidity meter, a small, inexpensive ($10-$50) instrument available at many hardware stores.
