Have We Seen the Last of Chinese Drywall Issues?

The term “Chinese drywall” refers to potentially hazardous drywall that was manufactured in China and imported to the U.S. for use in homes beginning in 2001. It was used to repair many hurricane-damaged homes in the South in 2004 and 2005, and has since been found to release harmful gasses, such as hydrogen sulfide, carbonyl sulfide, and carbon disulfide. These substances can cause damage to copper pipes, wiring, and air conditioner coils, as well as health problems, such as respiratory issues and headaches.

When it comes to litigation, nothing moves particularly quickly, so even now, there are cases of victims from Chinese drywall still waiting for compensation. Many gave up and walked away from their homes. Others were able to get their insurance company to help with the renovations necessary. One of the most frustrating issues is those homeowners who went with a lower-priced contractor, not realizing they only replaced the drywall without taking care of the electrical, ductwork, HVAC issues and other problems caused by Chinese drywall.

Any home built in the time period in which defective drywall could have been used should have their home inspected by a professional general contractor who not only specializes in complete remediation, but can also go to bat for the homeowner with the insurance company. There have been many cases in which homeowners have been entitled to a settlement, so contacting an attorney for assistance might also be necessary.

There is a lesson to be learned when it comes to the Chinese drywall fiasco – cheaper is cheaper for a reason, and it can be a risky proposition. When using building materials for a residence or even a commercial building, it pays to know where and how the materials are being produced.  Buyers beware when a price seems too good to be true because it probably is. Work with a quality general contractor who is careful with material selection and stands behind everything they do.
